Pet Medication Safety: Common Mistakes to Avoid
Most medication mishaps with pets aren't dramatic — they're small, avoidable slips. Here are the common ones, and how to stay on the safe side. (Always follow your vet's guidance; this is general information, not medical advice.)
Double-dosing
The classic: two people in the house each give the dose, or you can't remember if you already did. A double dose can range from harmless to dangerous depending on the drug. The fix is simple — log every dose so anyone can check at a glance whether it's been given.
Never give human medications without asking
Many common human drugs are toxic to pets — ibuprofen, acetaminophen (especially to cats), and others can cause serious harm even in small amounts. Never give a human medication to a pet unless your vet specifically told you to, including the exact dose.
Right pet, right pill
In a multi-pet home, mixing up medications is a real risk — the dog's dose can be wrong or harmful for the cat, and vice versa. Keep each pet's meds clearly separated and labelled, and double-check before you give.
Don't stop antibiotics early
When a pet perks up halfway through a course, it's tempting to stop. Don't — stopping antibiotics early can let the infection rebound, sometimes stronger. Finish the full course unless your vet says otherwise, and track the start and end dates so you know exactly when it's done.
Store meds safely
Keep medications in their original containers, follow storage instructions (some need refrigeration), and store them where pets and children can't reach. A chewed-open pill bottle is an emergency.
Watch for side effects — and write them down
If you notice vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite or anything unusual after a new medication, note it and call your vet. A clear record of what your pet took and when makes that conversation far more useful than "I think it started a few days ago."
